# In-house developer vs development subscription: the real cost

A US software developer's median pay was $135,980 in May 2025, and benefits make up about 30 percent of employers' total compensation costs, so by our estimate pay plus benefits comes to at most about $194,000 a year before recruiting, equipment and management. A year of our Starter plan billed yearly is $35,988. They are not the same thing: a hire gives you one person's full time, a subscription gives you a team's reserved capacity and running the product.

- **US median pay, software developers:** $135,980 (BLS, May 2025)
- **Delaware median pay:** $133,020 (BLS, May 2025)
- **Benefits share of compensation:** 30.0% (BLS, June 2026)
- **A year of Starter, billed yearly:** $35,988

## How much does an in-house software developer cost?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025. In Delaware the median was $133,020, and in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro area $133,040. Pay is only part of the cost. In the BLS's June 2026 survey of employer costs, wages and salaries were 70.0 percent of what private employers spent on compensation, and benefits the other 30.0 percent.

If a developer's benefits follow that average, total compensation at the median is about $194,000 a year ($135,980 divided by 0.70). That is our estimate from two BLS figures, not a BLS number. Benefit costs do not rise in step with pay, so treat it as the upper end of a range. It also leaves out recruiting, equipment, software, office costs and the time someone spends managing the hire.

## How does that compare with a development subscription?

**One in-house developer compared with a Plutonapps subscription**

| | One in-house developer | Plutonapps Starter |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Yearly cost | About $194,000 at the US median, pay plus benefits (our estimate from BLS data), plus recruiting and equipment | $35,988 billed yearly ($2,999/mo), or $3,999/mo month to month; infrastructure billed to you at cost |
| What you get | One person's full working time | A team's reserved capacity, with no per-change fee |
| Time to start | However long recruiting takes for the role | After onboarding; an engineer starts a change within two business days |
| Code review | Needs a second engineer | An engineer other than the author reviews every change |
| Holidays and sick days | Work waits unless someone covers | Capacity belongs to a team, not one person |
| On call | Only if you arrange it | Five emergency production events a month; unlimited on Growth |
| Scaling down | Letting someone go, and rehiring if you scale back up | Cancel anytime: a monthly plan ends with its billing month; a yearly plan runs to the end of its paid year (full refund within 7 days) |
| Knows your business | Deeply, over time | Through consulting sessions and architecture reviews |

In short: a subscription costs less than one developer at the median, but it is not a full-time person sitting in your team. It is reserved capacity from a team that also reviews, tests, releases and runs the product. A hire is the better buy when you have enough work to keep an engineer fully busy and someone to lead them.

## What does one in-house developer not cover?

A single engineer is a single point of failure. Unless you arrange otherwise, nobody reviews their code or covers their holidays, and only they know how production runs. Most products that run for real users need a mix of skills one person rarely has in full: database design, security, front-end, testing, infrastructure and [incident response](https://www.plutonapps.com/resources/what-is-incident-response). A first hire usually means a second one soon after, or a [technical co-founder](https://www.plutonapps.com/resources/what-is-a-technical-co-founder) or [fractional CTO](https://www.plutonapps.com/resources/what-is-a-fractional-cto) to lead them.

## When is hiring in-house the better choice?

- Software is your core product and will need full-time engineering for years.
- You have, or can hire, someone to lead engineers and review their work.
- Your workload is steady enough to keep each engineer fully busy.
- You need people on site, or in a regulated role that must be an employee.

Some companies do both in sequence: a subscription while the product finds its market, then an in-house team that takes over. If you stop a Plutonapps plan, we hand over the repositories, infrastructure and documentation and support the transition, so the team you hire starts from a working, tested product. ## Can a subscription work alongside an in-house team?

Yes. Inkwave's founder brought a Lovable-built site and their own team, and our engineers built the platform underneath with them: 105 pull requests merged between 11 August and 29 September 2026, and automated tests grown from 326 to 2,978 in eight weeks. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the average salary of a software developer in the US?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025, and a mean of $148,100. The median is the middle of the range: half earn more and half earn less.

### How much do benefits add to the cost of an employee?

In the BLS's Employer Costs for Employee Compensation survey for June 2026, benefits were 30.0 percent of private employers' compensation costs and wages 70.0 percent. Individual roles vary, so treat that as an average rather than a quote.

### Is a development subscription cheaper than hiring a developer?

In cash terms, a year of our Starter plan costs less than one developer at the US median once benefits are counted. But the two are not equivalent: a hire is one person's full time, while a subscription is a team's reserved capacity plus testing, releases and running the product.

### How much does a software developer cost in Delaware?

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $133,020 for software developers in Delaware in May 2025, and $133,040 across the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro area. Benefits and overheads come on top.

### Can we move from a subscription to our own team later?

Yes. You own the code, data and infrastructure throughout. When you stop, we hand over the repositories, infrastructure and documentation and support the transition to your team.
