Lovable vs Bolt vs Replit: which should you start in?

Start in Lovable for a web app on a Supabase-based backend with two-way GitHub sync. Start in Bolt if you want a JavaScript web or Expo mobile app with its own hosting and database. Start in Replit if you want separate development and production databases from day one, or a mobile app it can send to TestFlight. All three get you to a working app; none of them makes it production-ready on its own.

How do Lovable, Bolt and Replit compare?

All three are AI app builders: you describe what you want, an agent writes the code, and the tool hosts the result. They differ in what they generate, where your data lives and how easily the code leaves. The table below uses only what each vendor publishes about itself.

How does pricing compare between Lovable, Bolt and Replit?

The entry prices look alike, but each tool meters something different, so they cannot be compared one to one. Lovable sells credits: its pricing page says the cost of a message depends on the task, from half a credit for a small change to more for a whole page. Bolt sells tokens: Pro starts at 10 million a month with no daily cap. Replit sells a dollar balance of usage: Core includes $20 a month towards its models, and Pro includes $100 a month for $100.

  • Lovable Pro tiers run from 100 to 10,000 credits, priced $25 to $2,250 a month. Business starts at $50 a month. Workspaces have unlimited members on every plan, priced by credits rather than seats.
  • Bolt Teams is $30 per member a month, with the Pro allowances for each member. Enterprise is quoted.
  • Replit Pro is $100 a month, or $90 billed yearly, and runs up to ten agents in parallel. Enterprise is quoted.

In every case the real number is how many prompts your app takes, which nobody can tell you in advance. Building the hard parts (sign-in, payments, permissions) usually costs more prompts than the screens. Budget for a month or two at a higher tier, then step down.

Which builder has the better backend and database?

Lovable gives each project Lovable Cloud, which its docs describe as built on Supabase's open-source foundation: a Postgres database, sign-in, file storage, realtime updates and functions, without a separate Supabase account. You can also connect a Supabase project you own. Because the backend is Supabase, who can read what is decided by row-level security policies, and those are the first thing to review.

Bolt has its own Bolt Database for creating and managing data inside Bolt. Its docs do not say what it runs on, so we do not either. On Pro and Teams you can choose Supabase instead when you create a project, which is the better choice if you expect to take the app elsewhere.

Replit includes a managed PostgreSQL database in every app, with separate development and production databases, and recovery of earlier data. The development/production split is something the other two leave you to set up, and it matters the first time a test write must not reach real customers.

Can you take your code out of Lovable, Bolt or Replit?

Yes, from all three, which is the most important thing to check in any builder. Lovable says you own your code and the AI output you generate, offers a code download on paid plans and syncs both ways with one GitHub branch. Bolt commits automatically, pulls changes made outside Bolt every 30 seconds, and if both sides change at once keeps its own version and overwrites GitHub's, so do not have two people editing in both places. Replit imports from, pushes to and pulls from GitHub from its Git pane.

Getting the code out is the easy half. The data, the sign-in provider settings, the secrets and the stored files are the hard half, and that is where vendor lock-in actually lives. Our guide to migrating off Lovable Cloud shows what that move involves for one of the three.

Which one should you use for a mobile app?

If the app must be in the App Store or Google Play, Lovable is the wrong place to start. Its docs say it builds web apps, has no built-in app-store submission and does not generate React Native. You can install a Lovable app as a progressive web app, or wrap it with Capacitor outside Lovable.

Bolt and Replit both build mobile apps with Expo. Bolt publishes through Expo Application Services to TestFlight, the App Store, Google Play's beta track and the Play Store. Replit builds the native app in the cloud, configures your Apple certificates and submits the build to App Store Connect for TestFlight review; you still need your own Apple Developer Program account.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Lovable for a web product with accounts and data, when you want a Supabase backend you can later move into your own project and a GitHub repository a developer can pick up.
  • Choose Bolt for a JavaScript web app or an Expo mobile app with hosting included, or when you want the choice between its own database and Supabase.
  • Choose Replit when you want development and production databases from day one, or when the app needs a cloud build to TestFlight.

Most of the apps we take to production started in Lovable, so that is the builder we know best, and this page does not pretend to have benchmarked the other two. If you already have a working app in any of them, keep it there. Moving builders mid-build costs more than any difference between them.

What does each leave you to do before production?

The same list, whichever you choose. Lovable's own security docs say its scans cannot guarantee complete security and suggest a professional review for apps that handle sensitive data. Replit's pricing page says its Agent can occasionally make mistakes. That is honest of both, and true of all three.

  • Access rules: check on the server that each user can reach only their own data, not just that the screen hides it. See the Lovable security checklist.
  • Tests: cover sign-up, payment and the journeys that lose you customers when they break, with regression tests that run on every change.
  • Environments: a staging environment and a way to change the database without losing data.
  • Running it: monitoring, backups you have restored at least once, and a named person who answers when it breaks.

Our guide to taking a Lovable app to production walks through each step, and the production readiness check scores where your app stands in a few minutes, whichever builder made it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lovable or Bolt better?

Neither is better for everything. Lovable suits a web app on a Supabase-based backend with two-way GitHub sync. Bolt suits JavaScript web apps and Expo mobile apps with hosting included, and lets Pro users choose between Bolt Database and Supabase. Both start at $25 a month on monthly billing.

Is Lovable or Replit better?

Lovable is narrower and builds web apps on a Supabase-based backend. Replit covers more: a PostgreSQL database with separate development and production copies, and native mobile apps sent to TestFlight. Pick Lovable for a web product, Replit when you need what Lovable does not build.

Which is cheapest: Lovable, Bolt or Replit?

Replit Core has the lowest entry price at $20 a month, against $25 for Lovable Pro and Bolt Pro, but each meters usage differently: credits, tokens or a dollar balance. What you pay depends on how many prompts your app takes, so try the free plan of each on the same small feature before you compare.

Do I own the code I build in Lovable, Bolt or Replit?

Lovable states that you own your code and the AI output you generate. All three let you sync the code to a GitHub repository you control. Check each vendor's current terms for the details, and keep your own copy in GitHub from the first day.

Can an app built in Bolt or Replit go to production?

Yes, the same way as a Lovable app: after someone checks access rules on the server, adds tests over the important journeys, sets up staging and monitoring, and takes responsibility for running it. The builder you started in changes the details, not the list.
