What is a fractional CTO?

A fractional CTO is an experienced technology leader who works for a company part time, often a few days a month, to set technical direction: choosing the architecture and stack, reviewing what has been built, hiring engineers and advising the founders and investors. It gives a startup senior judgement without a full-time executive salary.

Why it matters when your prototype goes to production
A founder with an AI-built prototype often needs two things at once: someone to decide what should happen technically, and someone to do it. A fractional CTO covers the first. They will tell you the app needs row-level security, tests and a staging environment; they usually will not write them.

- Before a fundraise, to review the product and answer investors' technical questions.
- When you are about to hire engineers and need someone to judge them.
- When you have an engineering team or supplier and need an independent view of their work.
If what you need is the work itself, the architecture decisions and the engineers who carry them out, that is what a product engineering team or subscription provides.

What is the difference between a fractional CTO and a CTO?
Scope and time. A full-time CTO leads the engineering team every day. A fractional CTO advises part time and rarely manages day-to-day delivery.
