What is staff augmentation?
Renting engineers versus buying an outcome. The difference decides who manages the work.
In short
Staff augmentation is hiring engineers from an outside company to work inside your team, under your management, for as long as you need them. You get capacity without recruiting, but you still direct the work, make the technical decisions and carry responsibility for the result. It suits companies that already have engineering leadership and process.

Why it matters when your prototype goes to production
Staff augmentation works when someone on your side can say what to build, review the code and decide how releases happen. A founder with an AI-built prototype and no engineering lead is usually not in that position, and augmented engineers without direction tend to do exactly what they are told, which is rarely what production needs.

Whichever you choose, keep the code, accounts and infrastructure in your own name, so changing supplier stays possible.

Is staff augmentation outsourcing?
It is a form of it, but a narrow one: you outsource hiring, not management. With managed services or a subscription you also outsource responsibility for delivery.
